Cosmelan Depigmentation Treatment is a type of chemical peel. It is used to reduce unwanted pigmentation (brown spots) in the skin. The treatment consists of two different product applications: the first is a mask applied by our skin clinician, and the second is a cream applied by yourself at home. Cosmelan works by inhibiting melanin production. Melanin is responsible for the dark pigmentation seen on the skin. The body produces melanin as a response to UV exposure, but hormones, ageing and acne may also trigger it. Cosmelan can reduce melanin production and the discolouration it causes in the skin by inhibiting a specific type of enqyme (tyrosinase) that is directly involved in the production of melanin.
It is highly effective in combating hyperpigmentation, melasma, acne scarring, and other discolouration of the skin. This miracle peel can be used on a variety of skin areas including: the face, neck, hands and legs.
The treatment consists of two phases. Firstly, a highly potent de-pigmenting mask is applied by our skin clinician. This mask must stay on for up to 8-10 hours (dependent on your skin type). The second phase is a maintenance cream is applied by yourself at home twice daily to enhance the effects of the mask. About two to three days after the treatment is applied, the skin will begin to flake and peel. For the first few days the face may feel rather tight, itchy and appear slightly red.
Our Cosmelan Peel treatment includes a one-time in-clinic peel and 8 weeks worth of homecare products. Clients are required to continue with the recommended home care treatment for a total of 6 months, and thereafter are recommended to continue using a tyrosinase inhibiting homecare regime ongoing, to prevent the return of pigmentation. Your skin clinician will educate you further during your appointment.
Provided that skincare maintenance is continued, the results from a Cosmelan treatment can last for years or even be permanent.
